Golf Swing Takeaway Tip
Author: John Lynch
By John Lynch
I’ll never forget the time a few years ago when my brother in law Steve explained to me how he discovered a major break through in his golf swing. He describes this golf swing takeaway tip as “lightning in a bottle”…the true holy grail of golf!
Steve told me he had been sitting at an 8 handicap for about 4 years and was getting very frustrated at his lack of improvement. He practiced diligently however he had truly reached a plateau in his golf game.
He went through about 4 golf pros during this time and every one of them told him there was nothing wrong with his golf swing. Eventually he started playing less and less golf and was about ready to give it up altogether.
Steve said while on vacation with his family he was browsing through an old book store on Martha’s Vineyard when he came across a used copy of Joe Dante’s “Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf” written in 1972. He said he couldn't put the book down so out of courtesy to the store owner he bought it.
Steve showed me the book and as I leafed through it I was amazed at all the beautifully drawn illustrations showing how to swing a golf club properly. Andy Brown has since revised this book for the 21st century and offers many media formats to read or listen to the book.
Steve turned to the chapter that explains “the early backward wrist break” and told me this one magic move has totally transformed his golf game! He went on to say how golf pros never tell you HOW to break the wrists during the backswing for whatever reason. Steve believes the first 18 inches of the backswing are the most critical.
Most golfers fan the clubface open early in the backswing causing them to swing the club way too much to the inside…this knocks the swing off plane early in the backswing. Golfers then usually spend the rest of the golf swing trying to adjust so they can just make contact with the ball…not a good recipe for success!
The book goes on to say there should be no open or closing of the clubface early in the backswing…if you correctly perform the early backward wrist break your swing will be on plane early in the swing…Steve says he feels like the club is swinging itself…a truly effortless swing!
I am happy to say that my brother in law Steve is now a scratch golfer, thanks to this one magic move that has transformed his golf game!
When you make the backward wrist break perfectly - only one knuckle of your left hand (right handed golfers) and two knuckles of your right hand should be visible and the golf club should be parallel to your target line.

You pay a lot of money to play this great game of golf…so why not enjoy it more by playing the golf you are capable of?
Try this golf swing takeaway tip and build the early backward wrist break into your golf swing and I promise you will halve your handicap in 2 weeks!
Hit ‘em Long and Straight!

Pangya Super Swing Golf game for Wii, problems?!?
Hi there,
My husband and I have just bought the Pangya golf game for the Wii and we are having problems. We seem to be unable to swing and make a shot. The tutorial says there is a “Shot” button that is supposed to come up on screen which you’re meant to click on to set up and execute a shot. Thats fine. We get to that bit. But then theres a little box that comes up saying “Begin Shot”. This is the part we dont actually get. Instead, our screen always skips to the next stage which is “Takeaway”. From that point, it just flicks between “Takeaway” and “Swing”, but its like it hasnt registered and set up a shot properly. Anyone else having a problem with this game?! Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
We sorted it out by re-syncing the wii remotes. Thanks anyway!
u have to hold the B button and then it should let u pull back the controler to swing the club and hit the ball
my golf swing-takeaway
is it right to use your shoulders right away on your takeaway?coz whenever i use my arms to initiate my backswing, most of the time my downswing gets f’d up. its either i hit it to fat or hook the ball. And using your shoulders on your takeaway just makes it feel more smooth.
Think of your arms as the extension of the club to attach it to your body core, so your take away should be the rotation of your shoulders and not your arms.
Having said that, the initial take away is a level movement of the club head moving away from the ball. Imagine you have a straight line parallel to your stance behind the ball, your take away should follow that line for as long as you can without shifting your body or head sideways. The club will naturally move upwards if you do this.
Yes, take away and up-swing effects your down swing somewhat, but you’re probably swinging on a wrong swing plane to cause your downswing to be messed up. Regardless of how you get the club to the top of your swing, it should be parallel to the ground, pointing at the target, left arm straight (for right handed golfers) and body properly coiled. Think of dropping the club’s butt end towards the ground on your initial down-swing, once the club is half way down, think of ‘chopping’ a hole (divot) under the ball, upon contact with the ball, left your club head continue flying FORWARD towards the target and let the momemtum of the swing bring the club back around your left side.
Do this in slow motion and get the feel of it first before start hitting balls. Also don’t try to kill the ball, let the natural swing of the club do it’s job, you just concentrate on swinging properly.
GOLF-UPRIGHT/FLAT SWING?
Is this the same as taking your arms/ hands too outside or too inside? Or can one have a proper/straight takeaway and just not cock his wrists(club stays vertical)
Reason is,had a vertical swing(hit it fairly straight),then I made sure with driver that hands went back straight, even inside a bit to flatten. Someone commented on my fairly upright swing.(‘Colin Montgomery like’)-Was even begining to hook the ball-isnt this from a flat or too inside out swing??
Reviewed today Dave Ledbetter takeaway tips, and remembered to keep hands arms straight but make sure club is initially outside of hands-hit 12/14 fairways no prob.Woudnt this make a more outside in swing path?? Thanks
OMG Paralysis by analysis. See a good teaching PGA Teaching pro, don’t listen to these guys it will only confuse you. They can’t even see your swing!
How do I correct my golf swing?
My takeaway is giving me problems. My club goes WAY inside on the takeaway, thus causing my downswing to be flat and away from the ball, causing me to make contact around the hosel. Is there any type of equipment that works to correct this problem? Or…maybe a golf tip that you know that could help? Thanks!
Yeah, i used to have the same problem. When you take it back, it feels natural to take it inside, but try to take it staright back, which to you will feel like talking it outside. Also, toe to the sky is a good takeaway tip. MAke sure the toe of the club is facing the sky. Hope it helps!
check out my golf swing?
i know for a face i should be standing more upright or closer to the ball cause it looks like im hunched over. but what i noticed is on my takeaway my hands raise. i worked on this a while back and never had a problem. took a week off and now its back! i don’t remember how to stop it. could someone give me drills??

first of all its oriented sideways, but it digress. on the backswing you have the club getting inside your hands, you dont want that. on the takeaway when the club is paralell with the ground you want the clubhead in front of your hands or slightly outside. a good drill for this is is to go back to this position, stop, make sure the club hasnt gotten inside your hands, and go to the top and hit the ball. im sure youve seen mike weir and anthony kim with their pre shot routine where they take the club farther back than most people on the waggle? this is what they are doing, find some video of anthony kim and look at what he does before he hits the ball, this is a great example of the drill i am talking about. other than that i see a lot of things i like, you have a good athletic setup, nice knee flex, looks like a good shoulder turn on the way back and a nice move through the ball. keep working at it man.
